One of the best and unexpected promotional gifts I ever received was a mini flashlight MAGLITE.
When I was at college my friends and I used to frequent a small family run Italian restaurant where the wine and beer flowed and the food was fantastic. We used to gather there every Friday evening. It became a Friday night ritual.
The owner of the restaurant was a big Italian guy named Carlo. He used to sit down with us at the table from time to time always bringing a bottle of wine to top up our glasses. The place was great.
One year just before Christmas he came up to our table and sat down. The restaurant was not in the best part of town and I probably wouldn’t walk around there after dark anymore. Being that it was Christmas time, it was dark outside and he knew we all walked home afterwards.
He reached into a big canvas bag and brought our fifteen wrapped gifts.
“For you.” He said passing the wrapped gifts around the table. “They’re all the same so open them at the same time.”
None of us were expecting a gift but we opened the packages which all contained nice executive gift boxes. Inside were the mini MAGLITEs. They had been laser engraved with the restaurant logo and the text “Thank you from Carlo.”
“I always worried about you all getting home late at night so this year I decided to do something about it.” He said smiling.
I still have my MAGLITE flashlight as do most of my friends. It is sentimental. I used to go back and see Carlo whenever I went home. Each time I returned I would either meet old friends or introduce new friends to the best Italian outside of Italy.
Unfortunately the restaurant has since burned down and Carlo disappeared off the radar but I will never forget that place. If the restaurant was still there I would still be going back.
We were a group of loyal customers and Carlo recognised that. He made us feel special and you can do the same with your customers this Christmas regardless of your industry.
