Luckily for me, most of my big competitors still don’t understand how content marketing works or just don’t have the resources and structure in place to make it happen.

You see, just over two years ago I began writing articles and blogposts about the promotional merchandise my company supplies to businesses in the UK and Europe. To date I have written over 2000 articles about many different promotional products.

Each of these articles works as a silent salesman for my business that will continue do promote my company for many years to come.

Can I stop now that I’ve written 2000? What do you think?

The truth is, the more articles I write, the more customers find my company. These are people who understand the value of promotional products. By the time they find me, they know what they want or at least want me to help them find the best promotional products for their marketing requirements.

Would you like to attract new customers to your business too?

Business Blogging- The Art of Effective Headlines

Friday, March 25th, 2011

An effective headline is one that not only captures the reader’s attention and interest, but also accurately reflects what the article will be about. Above all, it should have the power to make the reader click on it and read the article. The headline should create the expectation of valuable information in the article. Think about how you search for information and the articles that you click on. Chances are you read the ones that a) sound interesting, and b) seem like they might contain information you haven’t come across before.

One of the easiest ways to make a headline more effective is to add “solution” or “benefit” words to the subject. When people are searching online, they are usually looking for a solution to some sort of problem. For example, if you were searching for ways to create effective headlines, how likely would you be to click on a blog post entitled “Good Headlines”? Probably not very likely. That headline does not give you much information as to the contents of the article. It might be relevant, but it’s quite dull and vague.

You might be more likely to click on “How To Write Good Headlines”. At least it sounds like the article could contain some sort of instruction or helpful hints. Chances are you would probably read “Create Effective Headlines Quickly Using These Five Phrases” because it looks like it will provide a solution, and because you believe you will find phrases you can use.

Phrases that can indicate a solution include how to, ways to, why you should, how you can, and so on. Words that imply a benefit are quickly, easily, increase, improve, success, effective and results. To create the headline, let’s call your product or service “My Product.” Simply combine it with solution and benefit words for some engaging headlines:

“How To Increase Your Sales Easily Using My Product Every Week”
“Ways You Can Use My Product To Generate More Traffic”
“How You Can Write Better Headlines With My Product And Increase Your Profits”
“Why You Should Use My Product If You Want To See Results”

Obviously, there are many more words you can use. There are also several timeless formats such as the list (The Three Top Reasons To…), the inside secret (What You Need To Know About…), and the question (Do You Know How To…)? The key is to create a phrase that makes the reader want to find out more. They should be able to understand what the post will be about, yet be intrigued enough to want to read on and discover what you have to say.

When you title a blog post, it’s also important to avoid ambiguous phrases, metaphors, and words with double meanings. While this can be an effective tactic for print articles, it can backfire for online text. When someone reads an article in the newspaper or a magazine, they already know what the publication is about, and they can appreciate a play on words as creative or humorous. If a reader is new to your blog or stumbles across your article online, he or she may have no idea what your business is about. The blog may have nothing to do with what they are looking for.

How does this happen? It’s actually very simple. When search engines scan newly created text, they need to correlate the headline to the article text in order to provide relevant search results. A new blog or website that has not yet been fully indexed in the search engines may not have enough other content for the search engines to fully “understand” what it is about. Use this technique judiciously until your blog is more established. It’s also a good idea to include your business or your product name somewhere in the headline so that your blog posts will be indexed correctly and rank higher in search results.

You should also be aware that search engines only display the first 70 characters of the title in the search results. There is some debate in the blogging community about whether short or long titles are more effective for ranking purposes. However, since the reader will only see the first 70 characters or so, it’s important to include the “meat” of the title near the beginning. This will make it more likely that readers will see it as relevant and click on it. Avoid too many adjectives and exclamations at the beginning of the title. You have a limited amount of space to work with, so be sure to include a solution word and your product so that readers will see it.

As you get more familiar with blogging, you will probably have many flashes of inspiration of topics to write about. It’s good to go ahead and get them in writing as soon as you can. But when you are sitting down to create a blog post, most blogging experts recommend creating the title first. This will help set the tone for your post and keep you on track. When your title creates the reader’s expectation, it’s easier to fulfill that expectation in your post.

5 Reasons Why Your Business Needs a Blog

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

These days it is difficult to turn on the news or read the paper without being introduced to this or that blog. If you are not into blogging yourself, it can be quite easy to put it all out of your head and concentrate on other information that is more familiar to you.

Blogs – or web logs as they were once called have come a long way. What were originally little more than personal online diaries are now helping promote business and organisation. Their author’s are offering information that they believe to be important and those who do it correctly are actually growing their businesses.

In this article I would like to offer you five reasons why you need to be blogging. Blogging is not going away folks so get into it and use this new media to your advantage.

1. Blogs can help you build your brand. Developing a regular readership increases your digital footprint and promotes your business. An interesting and informative blog with relevant, helpful content can get you recognized as an authority in your field.

2. Blogs can increase sales. Once you have a following of people who are already interested in your business, you have a ready-made audience for new product launches. Who would be more interested than people who already visit your site every day? These readers can also help generate a buzz about upcoming product releases.

3. Blogs are an essential and effective marketing tool. Increasing your visibility on the web can help both online and offline businesses. If your readers are active on social networking sites or are bloggers themselves, your business’s publicity can increase exponentially.

4. Blogs can improve your ranking in search results. If you have a web presence, a blog is practically a necessity. If there are others out there offering similar products or services, then you need to get readers and prospective customers away from the competition and onto your site. This is especially true if your business is internet-based, or if you have a brick-and-mortar operation and are expanding into internet sales.

5. Blogs can boost your credibility. Just because everyone else has a blog, does this mean you should, too? In this case, yes. Blogs have become so commonplace that customers expect them. If you don’t have one, people will wonder why not. Blogging demonstrates that you are committed to your business or trade and to developing relationships with your customers.

Quora * How This New Social Networking Site Will Help Build Brand You

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

The good stuff follows. Bear with me here! I am going to show you how you can build ‘brand you’ using Quora – but first a little bit about yours truly.

With Facebook I was late on the mark! All of my friends both current and forgotten were using the site to get in contact. I procrastinated until the pressure was too much.

Sound familiar?

When I started tweeting about a year and a half ago, I didn’t take Twitter very seriously either. In fact I didn’t see the potential of Twitter until months later – when the site became the conversation starter at every sales meeting and social get-together.

Could you imagine not having these sites now? They play a major role in so many people’s business and social lives. Their popularity can only increase as school kids use them and grow into working adults.

So it was with this in mind that I decided to check out the new kid on the block, Quora.

My fascination with the new ‘big thing’ in social networking happened as a result of a blog post I read by the popular American blogger Robert Scoble when he blogged “Is Quora the Biggest Blogging Innovation in 10 Years?”

You can read the article here – http://scobleizer.com/2010/12/26/is-quora-the-biggest-blogging-innovation-in-10-years/

Soon journalists at popular magazines and newspapers were jumping in to see what all the hype was about – as did I!

I immediately liked how I was invited to sign up using my Twitter or Facebook account. I chose Twitter and I am glad I did. More on that later.

Quora invites its members to follow topics that interest them. They can then ask questions that are open to other followers of that topic to answer. All members can also answer questions that are in their area of expertise.

Members following the question can then vote up or down the different answers.

I made my first ‘mistake’ by asking a question about one of my interests – article marketing – and then immediately answering the question. I was then told by someone – who is obviously very knowledgable in such things – that I shouldn’t do that. I chose to leave my question and answer there. No point in hiding it!

We are all new at this one.

You see, anyone who signs on to Quora right now is getting into a social networking site in its infancy even if it has been around for quite a while. The site has only recently gone viral which means it is the perfect time to get yourself in there and make a name for yourself.

Read the questions and answers written by others and follow those people and topics who interest you. When you feel comfortable doing so, ask a question or even answer a few. Judging from my experience, nothing bad will happen to you even if you make the odd ‘mistake.’

We’re all learning this together. That is part of being in this new and exciting community.

Like the other social networking sites before it, Quora will grow and progress in the direction that its members take it. That is part of the fun of being in it from the beginning.

Now for the good stuff.

By getting into Quora early, I have had a chance to answer questions and really let people know who I am and what I do. What’s more, my friendships on Twitter have grown stronger as many of my followers and the people I follow join Quora to see what it’s all about.

People I meet on Quora can easily follow my on Twitter as well by clicking the Twitter icon next to my name.

This has lead to conversations with interesting people I may have followed for monthson Twitter but with whom I never had a two way dialogue.

In some cases I have begun talking with and learning from people who I never really noticed but are now followers of my Facebook page, LinkedIn and Twitter pages.

With Quora, I have had a chance to learn about people’s expertise by the questions they ask and answer. Quora has made my social network relationships stronger and better. Such relationships just are not possible with Twitter alone. The two sites compliment each other perfectly.

Every day new followers know what I do for a living and I know what they do. We do not need to sell to one another. We can read each other’s answers to interesting questions.

We are able to introduce each other to our contacts and colleagues on other social networks making our digital footprints bigger and our time online much more fulfilling.

Want to build ‘brand you?’ Get into Quora now while it is young and watch how everything else falls into place.

Let’s get to know each other better! You can follow me on Quora at http://www.quora.com/dan-toombs.

Build Strong Business Relationships with Social Marketing & Promotional Merchandise

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Using promotional gifts and social media together works wonders.

What do you think of when you hear the word ‘social marketing?’

Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin are often popular answers in my search engine optimisation classes. But what about blogging, article marketing, videos and podcasts?

Lately blogging has been proved to be an invaluable and essential part of internet marketing. Adding quality, keyword rich content to your website daily will boost your ratings in Google and Bing. This makes it easier for people to find you and ultimately become customers.

If you are able to put your experience into a well structured article or video blog you are in a very strong position. Your competitors will need to keep up with your or bow out of the race.

Personally I have seen sales skyrocket in a time that is meant to be slow. My students have experienced similar success. Why? Because we all offer information in our own niches that others are looking for.

So what do you do when you receive all of this new business? There is no point going to all the work of blogging and article marketing if you don’t treat your new customers like gold when they find you!

This can be done by simply doing what you do best and offering them the excellent results they were looking for when they found you.

But why not go one step further? You have blogged and submitted articles to top article directories. You have even used your new Flip Video to upload some product videos to YouTube. Having then giving your new customers excellent results it is time for that other type of low cost marketing – promotional merchandise.

Promotional gifts reinforce your message and build brands. It is important to look for products your customers will appreciate and want to use.

If your new customers are office bound they will no doubt enjoy one or more of the many desktop gifts available. Products such as promotional pens, top quality mouse mats, promotional mugs and desk photo frames are all gifts that will get looked at often and kept for months if not years.

If your key customers work outdoors, you may wish to offer them printed t-shirts, caps, portable pen and notepad sets or even umbrellas.

Look for products that have something to do with your niche. If your customers are in the construction industry then look into logo printed tape measures, carpenter rulers or flasks, for example.

Putting together a planned social marketing campaign that is backed by good quality promotional merchandise will get you the results you are looking for.

What is your business niche? Do you have any ideas for a blog for your industry? What promotional gifts would you want to use to further strengthen your brand to your new customers? Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences by leaving a comment.

5 Top Blogging Strategies

Blogging can help promote your business right up the search engines

“For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

Hemingway was once challenged to write a complete story in six words. That little story you just read about baby shoes for sale was it.

Could you write about one of your products or services in six words? Go on… give it a go! You may be surprised at just how much you can say in just a few words.

I was once asked by one of my students to demonstrate how using the following blogging strategies could work for her. She was a supplier of promotional mugs and was finding writing continuously about mugs to be difficult. Together we sat down and and put it all together.

Write Keyword Rich Headlines That Make a Promise

The headline of your blog post is the most important part of your article.

I read an interesting statistic on the Copyblogger website that stated 8 out of 10 readers will read a headline but only 2 out of 10 readers will actually click on the headline and read further.
That is how important your title is!

The title of this article is “5 Top Blogging Strategies.” That is what you will get when you read this article. That is my promise. That promise is what presumably enticed you to read further.

Get the picture?

My student (who also happens to be my supplier) started her promotional mug blog post out with the title “Promotional Mugs – Where to Find The Lowest Prices.” When she wrote this title she knew she needed to deliver. The reader would want to know where to find the lowest prices for promotional mugs!

If she didn’t deliver she would lose the reader’s interest and they would switch off.

Engage Your Reader

What makes you think deeply about a subject? Questions often make me stop and think about a subject more thoroughly. How about you?

My student began her article with one of the most powerful words for engaging your audience – imagine.

She wrote “Imagine losing one of your best customers to the competition because you were far too expensive for the same promotional mug.”

Being in the promotional gifts industry myself, I would not want to contemplate such a situation! By engaging me as a reader in this way she drew me further into the body of her article.

Brevity Matters!

Try to keep you paragraphs and sentences short and to the point. People are busy. They do not have loads of time to immerse themselves into a longwinded blog. Studies have shown that when presented with a large paragraphs reader will turn off.

Present your information to your reader in short easily read bits. Short paragraphs are easy to scan for information which is what many of your readers will be doing.

Tell a Story

When I am writing blog posts about the promotional gifts I sell, I like to tell stories about how they have worked for my customers. Telling a story is another way of engaging your reader and helping them to see the benefits of using your products or services.

In this article I have touched on how one of my students has used the strategies presented here in her own blog post. Since taking on this advice, she has introduced her own readers to many different success stories that are both engaging and inspiring.

She has offered them ideas that they can use in their own marketing.

Use a Popular Quotation to Strengthen Your Point

I started this blog post with a well known quotation or story by Hemingway. It helps strengthen my argument that brevity is important. I also used it to engage you the reader. I asked you to try to write short six word posts about your products and/or services.

Finding the perfect quotation for your articles is not always easy and should never be forced. If the connection between your topic and the quotation are not obvious, don’t use the quotation!

I hope I have given you a few ideas to use in your blog posts. These strategies have worked for many bloggers and they can work for you too.

Have I left anything out that you feel should have been included? Do you have any blogging strategies that work for you? Would you care to share your ideas and experiences here by leaving a comment?

Promote Your Business with Promotional Merchandise and a Blog

Promotional Merchandise and blogging promote business

For many years, companies all over the world have been promoting their brand with promotional merchandise. From giving away promotional pens and promotional mugs to promotional clothing and promotional calendars, they have been successful in keeping the attention on their business. Thanks to the development of the Internet, business owners now have the opportunity to increase brand awareness with a blog. For the best results, however, the business owner must learn to merge these two strategies and increase their results.

A blog is basically a free website often utilized by a business to secure more business. It is often used as another means of communication with customers and prospects alike. In truth, it is fast becoming one of the quickest ways to generate an increase of traffic to a business website. Combine this with promotional gifts to be giving away and you will have a winning marketing campaign.

One of the best ways to use a blog with your promotional items is to hold a contest on the blog. You could state that everyday a new winner will be chosen from the individuals who comment on a post. If you need feedback on your company, the winner could be chosen from those who make suggestions to you. In fact, you could even hold a trivia contest and choose from everyone who sends in the right answer.

By holding a contest on your blog, you are going to generate a lot of interest in your business. However, you have to make it worth it for the customer. A small magnet with your business name and logo on it is not going to be enough. Customers want to receive something for free, but they want it to be something they can use. In this sense, a promotional t-shirt or tote bag will have be considered usable and, therefore, more value than a magnet.

As a business owner, your job is to increase brand awareness. By creating a blog about your business, you can easily increase your prospects. Combine it with your offering of promotional merchandise, however, and you are going to get more. The fact is, giving away free items that have been imprinted with your company’s name and log will also get your information out to thousands of others who may not have seen your blog, but instead, saw your information on a t-shirt, USB drive, or keychain that you gave away online.

7 Tips to Creating and Maintaining a Successful Blog

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Perhaps you have asked yourself, “How can I create a successful company blog?” Those that ask this question are taking a strong step in the right direction, even if they have little to no technological experience. One strategy to use when creating your company’s successful blog is analyzing the success of your favorite blogs. Most likely, your favorite blog has found a way to proactively use promotional products and inventive ideas in reaching out to audiences. This article will offer 7 tips for using qualities from your favorite blogs to create your own successful company blog.

1. Use Google Analytics to Research Your Audience
Google Analytics is a tool that can help you trace where the majority of your customers live and what keywords they are using to find you. With this information, you can tailor your blogposts to your audience!

2. Make a Press Release Announcing Your Blog and Any Promotions or Contests
When your company releases its blog online, be sure to commemorate this event with a press release. You can release the statement at www.prnewswire.com. Also, be sure to discuss any contests your company is hosting in the press release! This will get customers interested and give them a great incentive to follow your blog. Also, using promotional products for contests commemorating your blog is a fantastic idea. Products like gorgeous pen sets and embossed conference folders with your company logo can give your blog the edge it needs to stand out!

3. Use Simple Layouts
Flashy graphics and complicated layouts can distract from the content of your company blog. Pay attention to the layouts of your favorite blogs and notice what those blogs do right. If the focus is largely on content, then implement a similar strategy in the format of your blog. Simple formats often allow the text to stand out. Plus, a simple layout can mean people pay more attention to promotional product contests that create a wider customer base!

4. Make Information Relevant to Customers
Give customers valuable information, even if it is about how they can save time in a busy schedule or better enjoy life. Relevant information can also include giving promotional products like stress toys or promotional mugs to customers that consistently read the company blog!

5. Create a Catchy Blog Title
Create a title for your blog that makes customers feel like they are part of a community. The best blogs make customers feel like they are a part of something worthy of their time. Make customers feel engaged with your company, rather than distant from your company.

6. Create Your Own Domain Name, If Possible
If possible, try to create a blog with a stand alone domain name. This will make it easier on your company to market the blog. A great way to market a single domain name is by printing the blog site on stress toys!

7. Develop a Keyword Glossary Using WordTracker or SitePoint
Understand which keywords people use when searching for your company services or products. Develop a book of these keywords, so you can use them when blogging!

With these 7 tips, your blog is on the road to success! Using promotional products to market your new blog, along with these tips, will surely help you gain traffic in the months to come.

I hope this post has given you some ideas. Please feel free to leave a comment. Have you any ideas I have not covered?

Blogging and Promotional Gifts are the Perfect Pair

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Blogs have played an incredible role in re-defining companies when used in successful ways. To make your company blog a success and not a flop, be sure to have a strategy in place. This article will discuss 5 ways your company can host a perfect blog that builds customer loyalty, encourages online brand awareness, and ultimately increases the profitability of your company. The key to a successful blog strategy is using promotional products as a nice, sharp compliment to the blog!

1. Reward Customer Opinions and Input
Some of the major automobile companies in the world are still thriving, because they have an amazing online presence. These auto companies have kept from failing, because they have created blogs that reward customer suggestions and input. Every day, create a blogpost that inspires your customers to think about one aspect of your business. Simply have customers comment on blogs you create at sites like Blogger.com or WordPress.com. Whether you are thinking about the name of your blog or the name of a new product, get your customers involved and reward them with a cool promotional product. Customers will have an incentive to return to your company’s blog and offer future suggestions, if they continue adding their input and receiving promotional gifts. Fun, light-hearted promotional gifts like stress toys can be a great way to motivate customers’ creative ideas!

2. Adding Podcasts to Your Blog
After you have set up a company blog, it is not a bad idea to find a way to include podcasts on the blog. Invite your best customers for an interview on why they love your business. Then, place recorded customer input on your blog for the world to discover! A nice way to thank customers for doing a podcast interview is by sending them a gift basket filled with promotional products featuring your business information or logo. A gift card to your company, along with a promotional coffee mug set and pen set, is a great gift idea!

3. Scattering Links
Be sure to scatter links throughout a company blog to keep your customers interested. Include links to information that is valuable for your customers, whether it is your company’s latest new product or a news article that directly impacts your business. Also, you may want to host a blog contest offering promotional gifts like sports bags or mouse mats to the people that link the most to your blog!

4. Keep Posts Short and Generate Online Buzz with Contests
Keep blogposts short and seek to instantly capture your audience’s attention. If you are hosting a giveaway or contest, be sure to keep the rules or guidelines very short and direct. Be sure to offer a gift for customers’ time spent within a contest, even if it is just signing up for the contest. Promotional products such as sweatshirts and t-shirts are fantastic ways to motivate customers!

5. Use Catchy Headlines and Keywords
Your business should definitely seek to discover which keywords are most searched for when finding your business’s online website or blog. Perhaps you own a hotel business in an exotic location. If “exotic” is one of the most searched for terms, then be sure to write many blog posts with a headline that contains the word “exotic.” Headlines can be an influential way to gain online traffic in a short amount of time!

With these 5 tips, your company is on the road to success for hosting a blog that will be loved by your customers. Keep the content professional and make reading blogposts fun for customers by hosting contests with promotional products. You may gain a whole new customer base with these 5 tips!

Have you ever tried any of these marketing strategies? Did they work for you. Do you have any other ideas you can offer?  Please do.  Leave a comment and let me know what you think.
